Function

The main types of door functions are Passage (doors that don't require locking), Privacy (a door that can be locked by a button on the inside), Dummy (has no mechanical latch and acts only as a pull).

Handing

To identify if you require a right-handed or left-handed lever handle, simply stand on the side of the door where the door closes towards you. If the door is hinged to the right, you require a right-handed lever handle. If the door is hinged to the left, you will need a left-handed lever handle.

Rosettes

Backset

The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the 2-1/8-inch bore hole. In the United States, there are two common backsets for residential door locks: 2 3/8 inches and 2 3/4 inches

Latch Type

Most residential doors are mortised for either a square latch or round corner latch. Drive-in latches do not have a faceplate. They are usually used for hollow doors.
